MR H. W. BATEMAN

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 14. A former private secretary to several Cabinet ministers Mr H. W. Bateman, died in Hutt Hospital this week. Born in 1897 at Thames. Mr Bateman joined the Public Service as a clerk in the Internal Affairs Department, in 1915. He was successively with the Defence Department, the Treasury and the State Advances Corporation. In 1941 he was attached to the secretarial staff of the Minister of Finance (Mr Nash). A year later he was with the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser). Between 1949 and 1954 he served as secretary to various ministers. He retired in 1956.
