Market Gains In Sydney Trading
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 14. The Sydney share market gained ground during the last week with the share price index gaining 4.45 points to 332.82, says the weekly market report.
Total average daily turnover of 768,800 was slightly above average. B.H.P. continued to be well traded with the shares gaining 14 to 638. On July 11, B.H.P. advised that Esso Gippsland Shelf No. 5 had reached a depth of 7748 feet and was being drilled ahead. Rothmans of Pall Mall (Aust) announced a group result for the year to June 30 of 3,026,860 dollars compared with 3,119,150 dollars last year. This figure was arrived at after providing 2,386,780 dollars (last year 2,724,876 dollars) for taxation and 1,486,248 dollars (last year 1,486,248 dollars) for depreciation. The company declared a
final dividend of 10 per cent making an unchanged 20 per cent for the year. It has been heard that Rothmans is spending 2m dollars on launching a new cigarette “Grenadiers" in the medium price bracket Directors report the initial response has been excellent They also reported that further brands were ready for release in the coming year. The announcement failed to influence the shares which have remained steady at 285. Directors of Waltons reported that arrangements were being made to purchase the Canberra store of Marcus Clark as a going concern. The premises are on a 37year lease.
