CONDUCTOR RETIRING
Led N.Z. Band In U.S. (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 12. An internationally known band conductor, Mr Norman Thorn, today announced his retirement as musical director of the Roslyn Mills-Kaiko-rai Brass Band. “I have had 30 years in the band movement,” he said. “Now I feel my era is over. I am making way for new ideas and new blood.” Mr Thorn began playing with the Dunedin Tramways Band when he was 13, and when it disbanded joined the St. Kilda Band. He also played for military bands during World War 11. As a solo soprano cornetist he was champion of New Zealand on five occasions. He became musical director of Kaikorai Band (now Roslyn Mills-Kaikorai) 17 years ago and led it to five national championship victories. Last year Mr Thorn was conductor of the New Zealand brass band which made a triumphant tour of North America. “Norman Thorn brought the Roslyn Mills-Kai-korai band up to world standard,” said its president, Mr A. S. Cayzer, today. Mr Cayzer announced that the band’s new musical director would be Mr J. Edgecombe, the present deputy conductor.
