FIRST-DAY COVERS
[Special Stamp Cancelling Last year, the Post Office Introduced appliances at the four main centres only for the cancelling of stamps on first-day and souvenir covers by means of rubber datestamp impressions. The Chief Postmaster (Mr M. E. Wilson) said that this practice had been so well received that all chief post offices in New Zealand were being issued with stamps of the same type. The stamps will be used on August 3 at the 21 chief post offices for first day covers bearing the 1966 health stamps. Persons outside towns and cities with chief post offices, and who want covers marked with these special hand-can-cellers, should forward remittances and addressed envelopes under cover to the Chief Postmaster of their choice. The cover should be endorsed “Covers for cancellation with hand-canceller on August 3,” and must reach the Chief Postmaster not later than August 1. The remittance should cover the cost of the health stamps required (4d and 5d each) plus a servicing fee of 2d for each cover. Cancellations at all offices other than chief post offices will be by steel date-stamps as in the past.
