Objection To Labour-Only

A deputation of executive members of the Federation of Labour and representatives of unions yesterday waited on a Christchurch firm employing block-layers on labour-only contracts.

At Marsden Point 86 members of the C arpenters* Union have been on strike for a month in protest against the use of labour-only contracts on the housing project.

The president of the Canterbury Trades Council of the Federation of Labour (Mr R. A. Hill) said after the visit to the firm that those present Included representatives of unions which would become involved in the dispute if it was widened. “The Trades Council is determined to carry out the policy of the F.0.L.. A full report will be made at the monthly meeting of the council tomorrow night and a decision made on action,” said Mr Hill.

Mr Hill said that the F.O.L. policy on labour-only contracts was clearly stated at the annual conference of the federation—“ That the Federation of Labour and all its affiliates organise and act in opposition to any ‘labour-only’ contracts.”

At a meeting in the Trades Hall this week, the secretary of the New Zealand Carpenters’ Union (Mr W. F. Molineux) held talks on labouronly contracts. He discussed the issue with the executive and the disputes’ committee of the Trades Council and executive members of the Canterbury branch of the Carpenters’ Union.
