INTER-SCHOOL RUGBY

Christchurch, Shirley and St. Bede’s all gained victories in yesterday’s inter-school Rugby matches. Christchurch beat Christ’s College, 11-3; Shirley defeated Xavier College, 20-8; and St. Bede’s beat St. Andrew’s, 17-14.

and exceptional speed to the loose ball sorely tested Christ’s College. Inside him, Legge was most competent and Phillipson impressed as a quick server of the ball and was a constant harasser of his opposite, Penny Penny had a most unhappy day: he was frequently caught in possesion and had a poor liaison with his five-eighths. The most impressive of the other backs was the C.B.H.S. wing. Jolly, who scored a good try when given half an overlap.

The Christ’s College backs were conspicuous by their evenness, but also by their lack of verve.

The bigger Christ’s College fiack was served well in the ine-outs by Morris and Read and packed better in the scrums. However, it was well shaded in the loose by the more alert C.B.H.S. forwards, headed by Lee, who did much useful work heading rushes and on coverdefence.

Smith, the C.B.H.S. flanker, was warned for late tackling and again after an incident which led to the Christ's College full-back having to leave the field.

Boulton was also warned by the most efficient referee, Mr A. R. Taylor, and these sour incidents did nothing to further the tradition that is asociated with this annual fixture.

play, but Its backs were not as penetrative as their opposites.

It was unfortunate that three players, two from St. Bede’s and one from St. Andrew's, were forced by injuries to retire. B. J. Lyons, the St. Bede’s lock, broke has right leg while R. J. Cavanagh, at fullback, injured a nerve In his back. G. Twiss, the St. Andrew's prop, injured a leg. Teams:

St. Bede’s.—R. J. Cavanagh; R. C. Berry, G. J. Donaldson, J. B. McDermott; G. T. Brady, C. D. Day; A. P. Jones (captain); B.lt. Kelly: J. N. Marinovic, B. J. Lyon, V. E. Stewart, G. W. Diedrichs; D. E. Lindstrom, K. A. Cowan, J. C. Sutherland.

St. Andrew’s. —I. Wright; M. Moore, W. Steel (captain), R. Moore; N. Bray, M. McEwan; M. Fisher; G. King; L. Jeffs, R. Ruffell, D. Mclntosh, R. Murdoch; G. Twiss, R. Mabin, T. McElrea.

St. Bede’s was a little fortunate to win in as much as it sco-red one try lesis than St. Andrew’s, but in Jones it had a kicker superior to the unfriendly conditions. Jones, who captained St. Bede’s, was a dominant figure at half-back; marshaling his backs well and kicking accurately. His tactical punts, and those of his first five-eighths, Day, put St. Bede’s on to attack on many occasions. Although receiving considerably less ball from set play, the St. Andrew’s backs looked superior, the three-quarter line of M. Moore, Steel and R. Moore, always Impressive. The players Inside them concentrated on getting the ball to Steel, who made come thrilling breaks.

However, the best back on the field was the St. Andrew's full-back, Wright. His almost (lawless handiling, all Med with long line kicks, showed him as a fine prospect and he made a number of valuable incursions into the line, scoring a try after rowing under two tacklers.

Day, Jones and Diedrichs scored tries for St. Bede’s: Jones converting one and kicking two penalty goals. King, M. Moore, R. Moore and Wright scored tries for St. Andrew’s; Ruffeli converting one.
