NY HAS MUCH AT STAKE
R. Perez, a vastly more experienced boxer (55 professional bouts, including two with world champions) should beat L. Ny (seven bouts), the New Zealand professional bantam-weight champion, in the top-of-the-bill matching at Canterbury Court this evening.
Perez moves fast and has a punishing left hook. The bout is over 10 rounds, and Ny has only once boxed over this distance—when he was beaten on points by the brilliant Australian aborigine, L. Rose. Ny’s future depends largely on his showing against Perez, for he has challenged T. [George (Auckland) for the New Zealand feather-weight title. George has beaten Perez and has lost to him. The Canterbury Boxing Association is negotiating for a bout between N. Kunde, the Australian bantam-weight champion—whom Perez has beaten in a non-title bout—and Ny. The outcome of tonight’s bout could be decided by Ny’s determination. He is on the way up, and has everything to win. Perez has been beaten at the top and is now a globe-trotting boxer, interested in the money only. Ny has the power in his punches to beat his more ex-
perienced boxer—he has won six times by the short route—if he attacks from the outset and is not over-awed. Equal Interest The performance of both G. Ford, contender for the Australian welter-weight title, and E. Mensah, the Ghanaian boxer from Britain, will be of equal interest. Mensah will weigh about lOst. He has proved a tough boxer whom opponents find most difficult to handle. Ford is a south-paw, and will benefit from a longer reach. Mensah is not a hard puncher but he has demonstrated in his four fights here (one loss, against B. Maunsell, on a split decision) that he can take punishment. Ford, if the standard of boxing in Australia is high and his rating as No. 1 contender for the welter title is justified, should be able to give Mensah a lesson in boxing to win on points. If he allows himself to be drawn ; into fighting, Mensah will 'win.
