MIGRANT SAMOANS

‘No Flood To N.Z. ’ There was no flood of Samoan immigrants to New Zealand but the contact with New Zealand through immigration was having a beneficial effect, said the Rev. Kenape Faletoese, associate minister of Trinity Congregational church, yesterday. Mr Faletoese was commenting on a report that the number of Cook Islands immigrants to New Zealand had reached a flood and was leaving the islands with a large proportion of very old and very young. People from Western Samoa came to New Zealand on three-month or six-month permits. Those on 3-month permits returned after the permit expired; those on sixmonth permits could apply for permanent residence. There were about 8000 Samoans in New Zealand, about 400 in Christchurch, Mr Faletoese said. Samoa was gaining from the education of its people in New Zealand and from the money sent back by members of families. Immigration was not taking too many people away from Western Samoa where the population was increasing rapidly.
