BACILLARY DYSENTERY
19 Cases Last Week
Nineteen cases of bacillary dysentery were reported in the Christchurch health district last week. People in Waimairi, Riccarton and the city have been affected. Health Department inspectors have not yet reported the ages or sex of those affected, but the medical officer of health (Dr. L. F. Jepson), says that, as usual, the disease is most common among school children. The cases have generally been mild, with diarrhoea. Dr. Jepson says precautionary measures have been taken in the affected schools. Regular hand washing after using the toilet and before meals is essential. Anyone who has an attack of diarrhoea should consult their family doctor, says Dr. Jepson. There were four cases of bacillary dysentery reported in the previous week. An infant girt and three men were affected. Also last week two cases of pulmonary tuberculosis were reported.
