CUP WON BY RANGERS
Lifeless Ice Hockey Play
Rangers won the Christchurch Cup for 1968 when they beat Wolves by nine goals to six in a dull and lifeless ice hockey match played at the Indoor Ice Rink last night. The Wolves goalie played what was probably his worst game of the season, and let in a number of fairly easy goals. This encouraged the Wolves player* to try and clear the puck from their own goal area as fast as possible, with the result that most of their shot* were wild and were picked up by the Rangers player* again. Although Wolves had the better of the play in the first period, Rangers did most of the scoring, and halfway through the period had a lead of five goals to one. Wolves started the second period well and fast passing plays brought them to within one goal of Rangers, but wild passing later on let them down and Ranger* soon added another three goals to make the score 8-4 at the end of the second period. The game slowed down in the final period, with Wolves making most of the plays. They scored twice to Rangers once but again bad passing spoilt most of their moves. Scorers were:—Wolves: B. Guy 5, J. Dale. Rangers: D. Fisher 2, R. Cooper 3, M. Cotter 2. J. Hanning, S. Pluck. Referees: Messrs H. van der Velden and J. van der Griend.
