Coal For 200 Years
(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, July 11. Drilling being done by the Mines Department in the coalfields north of Huntly is expected to reveal a continuation of the present known seams of 100,000,00 tons of coal. The Rotowaro State Mines district manager, Mr J. Adamson said he was sure there would be enough coal in the Huntly fields to meet the day demands from the Waikato area for more than the next 200 years. “The known Huntly coalfield is five square miles, and we believe this field contains 200,000,000 tons. We confidently expect the present boring programme to reveal a total of 300,000,00 tons of coal,” he said. He said the Huntly coalfield was the largest known single coal deposit in New Zealand and the seams varied from seven to 80 feet in thickness.
