PRICES FOR LAMB
i “Canada Best Of AU” The market for New Zealand lamb in North America is becoming more profitable and the price is running ahead ol that being received in Britain. In an address to farmers in North Canterbury last week. Mr P. D. Hewland, director of trade promotion for tne Meat Board, said that the | system of procurement of | lamb from the freezing couij panics in New Zealand was such that the Meat Export ! Development Company (N.Z.) i Ltd., stood to record a profit or loss within its own books i according to whether the lamb price in Britain was higher or lower than that received in Canada and the United States. “For some years the price in Britain ran at a higher level than that obtained in North America. Recently the differential has been tho other way round,” he said. ' “Canada is currently returning | the best price of all. There are increasing sales at much improved returns. “Promotion work in Canada by the Development Company and the Meat Board has established New Zealand as the supplier of at least half the lamb consumed in Canada. About 500,000 lambs, or 8000 tons, will go to Canada this year. About 6000 tons went last year. Promotion is being expanded now that an increasing volume of lamb is expected to come forward to back up this work.” Referring to the Japanese market Mr Hewland said that for the last two years and more the promotion of lamb there had been undertaken by the board and “enterprising export firms in the South Island.” Sales of lamb to Japan this year would be between 1000 and 2000 tons. About 1100 tons had already gone.
