Ninth Time In Final

J. R. Brown, who has qualified to compete in the New Zealand ploughing championships eight times previously, qualified again at the annual Papakaio match on Saturday. By a margin of three points he beat H. A. Magson, of Rokeby, who was second in the world championships in France in 1961. Brown was third in the national championships at Rotorua in 1963.

Saturday’s match was held on the same field as the first New Zealand championships in 1956.

One of the judges, Mr D. J. Stewart, of Rakaia, said that the ground had been

very dry and the soil had tended to break and crumble. It had still ploughed better than had been expected. Brown had bettered Magson’s feering by three points. In ploughing and uniformity, both men had been very even and both had had outstandingly good finishes. Mr Stewart judged with Messrs T. F. Carter, of Greenpark, and A. L. Coleman, of Ladbrooks. The qualifying round attracted a field of nine. Placings were: J. R. Brown (Nelson). 153 1/3 points, 1: H. A.

Magson (Rokeby). 150 1/3. 2; M. Davidson (Rolleston). 143. 3: A. Johnston (Rakaia), 137, 4; J. Rawlinson (Methven), 133 2/3, 5.
