Bright Play By Old Boys
OLD BOYS 20: R. Colombus (2), P. Hatchwell scored tries, HatchweM kicked a field goal and M. J. Millar kicked two penalties and a conversion. BELFAST 13: R. Hickey, A. Clarke and R. Inwood scored tries; Inwood converted two tries. Old Boys, playing a running and passing game usually associated with high school first fifteens, thoroughly deserved to beat Belfast at Sheldon Park on Saturday. Belfast toiled hard and, even if not looking a winning side, was rewarded with two opportunist tries and a third from a maul near the line after a series of forward rushes.
Although Old Boys spent the first 10 minutes on attack, it was Hickey, of Belfast, who opened the scoring. He picked up a dropped pass during an
Old Boys back attack and ran 70 yards to score between the posts. Old Boys renewed the attack and although looking likely, could not break through resolute defence. Millar kicked two penalty goals to make the half-time score Old Boys 6. Belfast 5. Hatchwel! potted a goal for Old Boys, but this was the end of the scoring until well into the half when two incisive runs by Mehrtens put first Hatchwell over for a try and a few minutes later Columbus over for a second. Columbus scored his second try from an orthodox back movement after a lineout. Belfast finished strongly bv scoring two tries in the last five minutes. Among the forwards Macintosh for Old Boys and Burghen for Belfast played well. Mehrtens was head and shoulders above any other back.
