Hurimui Beats Ellesmere
Hurunui beat Ellesmere 14-8 in a Southbridge shield series Rugby match at Leeston. The game was not of a high standard, being spoilt by much indecisive iine-out play, with both half-backs receiving little good bald.
The Hurunui forwards played with more fire and this was largely responsible for its sixpoint margin. The backs of both sides were disappointing, passes being dropped and possession being given away by aimless kicking. Hurunui opened the scoring when J. Sowden forced his way over from a line-out. J. Gardner converted. Soon after F. Fowler scored after a kick ahead by Gardner. Just on halftime, N. Alexander kicked an easy penalty goal for Ellesmere. Hurunui went to 11-3 when Gardner kicked a penalty early in the second spell. About 10 minutes from time. with Hurunui hot on attack, W. Brooks snapped up a dropped pass and ran the length of the field .to score for Elilesmere. Alexander converted. Right on time Gardner was awarded a try for Hurunui from a scramble near the line
A. Alderalley was sound at full-back for Hurunui. The forwards, G. Dunster, J. Sowden, and M. Meßreen, worked hard. Its winger. Brooks, and the centre, R. Wards, were the best of the Elilesmere backs. The captain. W. Scott, was easily the best of the Ellesmere forwards.
