ARMY EXERCISE SUCCESSFUL

The command post exercise held at Burnham Military Camp in the last two days had proved very successful and most valuable to the officers and men involved, the director of the exercise (Brigadier T. C. Campbell) said yesterday.

The exercise simulated a full-scale South-east Asian battle, the enemy being regular troops rather than insurgents.

but also in the defeat of the “enemy.” “The men involved put in long hours —most had no more than eight hours sleep during the two days—and the exercise had a good tempo and was realistic.

The main intention of the exercise was to train officers in command post procedures, said Brigadier Campbell, and it had been successful not only in the lessons in taught

“It served its purpose of refreshing the more senior officers in the routine of running a command post and of training the younger officers in the same routine.”

About 250 men took part in the exercise, which began on Friday afternoon, and most were territorials from units throughout the South Island and from Taranaki and the Bay of Plenty. There were also some regular Army troops participating. The Royal New Zealand Air Force took part by simulating air drops and offensive and defensive operations.
