Gaoled On Civil Rights Charges
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter— Copyright) ATHENS (Georgia), July 10. Two Ku Klux Klansmen found guilty on Friday of conspiring to violate the civil rights of Negroes were yesterday given maximum gaol terms of 10 years each.
Joseph Howard Sims, aged 41, and Cecil Myers, aged 26, were said by Federal agents to have been identified by a fellow klansman as the men who shot to death the Negro educator, Mr Lemuel Penn, in July, 1964. They were acquitted of murder charges by a Georgia State Court in September, 1964. Four other klansmen tried in the United States District Court in Athens on civil
rights conspiracy charges were acquitted on Friday. The prosecution had charged all six with conspiring to injure, oppress, threaten, and intimidate Negroes, including Mr Penn. He was an army reserve lieutenantcolonel and was returning home from summer training when he was killed.
Through their lawyer, James Hudson, Sims and Myers said they would appeal. The judge set bail for them at 35,000 dollars each.
