Leisure Trouble A four-month study of “the problem of leisure” will be conducted under a travelling fellowship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust by Mr I. Crichton, a contributor to the Peterborough column of the “Daily Telegraph,” according to a list of the first 66 British Churchill Trust fellows published in Britain. He will undertake this study in the United States. Another fellow who will travel to the United States—for three months—is Mr G. I. Kingdon, who will try to “. . . acquire new ideas and a more dynamic attitude on selling hardware.” Mild Week-End A fresh south-west wind brought light showers to Christchurch on Saturday morning. Yesterday the weather was fine and a light west wind blew in the afternoon. The maximum temperature for the week-end was recorded at Harewood at 2 p.m. yesterday. A frost of 10 degrees was recorded at Harewood yesterday, and at the Botanic Gardens there was a frost of 8 degrees. At Harewood at 6 a.m. yesterday the temperature was 40 degrees. At 9 a.m. it had dropped to 37 degrees, but by noon it was 48 degrees. At 3 p.m. the temperature was 55 degrees. The gauge on the Government Life building registered 52 degrees at 5 p.m. Dirty Water Mount Roskill was getting dirty water from the Auckland Regional Authority mains, the chief borough health inspector (Mr I. Crickett) told the Mount Roskill Borough Council. Samples taken at Lynfield College, which was a first draw-off from the authority main, proved that the fault came from the bulk supply, he said. Mr Crickett said it could be assumed that the borough was being supplied intermittently with discoloured water by the authority, and although the water was safe it was not very palatable or suitable for household use. Wine Shortage Overseas tourists would be critical of the inability of New Zealand hotels to serve overseas wines because of the import restrictions, Mr M. O. Barnett, chairman of New Zealand Breweries, Ltd., said in his annual report. While connoisseurs agreed that New Zealand wines had improved considerably and that the best were acceptable in any company, they were scarce. Midge Research The cost of midge research by the drainage division of the Auckland Regional Authority is estimated to be £3300 this year. There is still no indication of midges at the North Shore Drainage Board oxidation lake after spraying with a new chemical some weeks ago. Naming A City Brentwood, Heretaunga, Maidstone, Trentham, and Upper Hutt are the names proposed for the new city of Upper Hutt Cards listing the names are now being sent out with rate demands to nearly 4800 ratepayers, who have been asked to return the cards by August 14, listing the names in order of preference. Noon Weather Noon weather yesterday was:—Auckland, 57, cloudy, south-west 15; Wellington, 55, fine, north-west 15; Christchurch, 49, fine, north-east 10; Dunedin, 46, fine, south-west 5.—(P.A.)
