BALONEY MAY TEST TWO-YEAR-OLDS

If Baloney outruns his two-year-old rivals in the Nursery Handicap at Washdyke today the Riccarton horseman, D. N. Hadfield, will have made a wise decision m his choice of mounts.

On the first day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting last Saturday Hadfield rode Avobelle, the run-ner-up to Smart Time in the Winchester Stakes. He could have ridden the Riccarton filly again today, but instead chose Baloney. Baloney, which is trained by E. P. Corboy, will have the advantage of racing on his home course. That is not his only recommendation. The last time he raced he finished third at Ashburton for his second successive minor placing. On Ashburton form Baloney should beat Avobelle. She could get no closer than seventh in the Lyndhurst Two-year-old Handicap there. But last Saturday’s form suggests that she is improving all the time. Otago supporters will hope for a Farmer’s Girl victory. No-one will be surprised if the Agricola filly realises expectations. She shaped like an early improver when fourth, only half a length from Baloney at Ashburton. The Nursery Handicap will be the second leg of the double for course patrons will be the Otaio Maiden Stakes. With a capacity field of 20 maiden sprinters engaged, it is anyone’s guess which might win. But if form proves the most valuable

guiSe. Ranana, Skinfull and Cesare Borgia might dispute the finish.

The main double will be run on the H. H. Fraser Memorial and Stewards’ Handicaps. Because the ground has eased slightly, the Riccarton stablemates. Even Chance and Krazikid, might be as good as any of the combinations. There was mid week rain In South Canterbury, but the weather yesterday was only overcast. The track is not as firm as on the first day, but if there is no more rain it will be no worse than easy. Fields are.— FIRST LEG OF ON-COURSE DOUBLE 11.30 a.m.— OTAIO STAKES,
