WOMEN'S CLUB
Mrs K. E. Lester, who recently returned from three years in the United States, was guest speaker at the June meeting of the Canterbury Women’s Club. American hospitality was wonderful, she told the audience. People went out of their way to entertain visitors and they showed a great interest in other countries. Easter time was not a holiday time in the United States, said Mrs Lester. People worked on Good Friday and Easter Monday but they held Communion on Thursday. On Easter Sunday, everyone dressed in their best clothes and went to church at 5.30 a.m. and then to breakfast in a restaurant. Church services continued all day and every service was crowded, said Mrs Lester. On Christmas Day, which was the only holiday of the Christmas period, the church services were also packed. Mrs W. Mason thanked the speaker and presented her with flowers. Miss M. Smith accompanied by Mrs J. H. Cocks sang three songs and was presented with flowers by the club president (Mrs L. P. Bennett). Mrs Bennett also thanked Mrs D. Stewart and other members of the literary circle committee who had acted as hostesses.
