DANGERS OF SMOKING

Message To Teachers

“Since 1962 continuing research has confirmed that cigarette smoking can constitute a hazard to health, and I should like to remind teachers of the points made in the earlier memorandum and to ask for their co-operation in ensuring that all young people are made aware of the facts,” say the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) in a letter to schools.

He repeats the earlier memorandum: “The conclusions of the report of the Royal College of Physicians about the dangers of smoking, particularly cigarette smoking, should be made widely known in schools and other educational establishments. These conclusions are so convincing that a fresh and positive effort must be made to discourage smoking among children and to prevent the formation of the smoking habit. . . . “Success in any campaign to reduce smoking among school children depends on many factors. Among them are the example adults are prepared to set and how effectively the dangers are brought home to children in the schools. “I am sure that the booklet issued by the Health Department will be welcomed and used by teachers not only to influence children directly, but also to provide discussions at pareot-teacher meetings, and in teachers’ colleges and youth clubs.”
