OYSTER CATCH
Kumea Leads Bluff Fleet
With about 12 weeks of the oyster season left, the Christchurch oyster boat Kumea is leading the rest of the Bluff oyster fleet in catches, according to the chairman of directors of Fisheries (South Island), Ltd., Mr B. R. Walker. The Kumea had already exceeded her first season’s catch of 6100 sacks and last season’s catch of 800 sacks, said Mr Walker,
After being kept in port for 12 days because of bad southwesterly weather, the fleet went out at the beginning of the week. For this time of year catches were unusually good. During the last three days, the Kumea had dredged 285 sacks of oysters. At 2s 3d a dozen, Christchurch could boast the cheapest oysters in New Zealand, said Mr Walkeer.
