SAFETY IN MOUNTAINS
Course May Be Held The possibility of establishing a leadership course for mountaineering instructors in Christchurch this year was discussed at a mountain safety meeting recently. The meeting was arranged by Mr M. Thoms, chairman of the Canterbury Youth Council, who had realised the importance of co-ordinating youth activities with mountain safety courses. Others who attended the meeting were Mr J. Ede, the Canterbury liaison officer for the National Mountain Safety Committee, Mr F. Carter, who has been the director of a number of successful camping schools at Lake Taylor, and Mr L. J. Coughlan the Canterbury Youth Activities officer. Mr Coughlan said that how mountain safety in adventure courses would affect members of youth groups was also discussed. ‘Stress was placed on safety in the. bush and in crossing rivers,” said Mr Coughlan. “Many youth organisations are seeking new forms of outdoor recreations,” he said. “If young people are going to find this recreation in the bush and the mountains they | must learn safety.” (
