POTATOES FROM LYTTELTON
60,000-Sack Drop This Year Potato shipments from Lyttelton so far this year total almost 60,000 sacks below the total for the corresponding period last year. Timaru shipments so far are only a third of last year’s. With no Australian trade this year, the main decline has been shown in shipments overseas. At Lyttelton, to June 30, they totalled only 21,945 sacks, compared with nearly 74,000 last year. Timaru last year had exported nearly 45,000 by June 30, but this year has not shipped any potatoes overseas. During June, 45,340 sacks were shipped from Lyttelton, bringing the total for the season to 79,626, compared with 139,254 for the same period last year. From Timaru, 17,320 sacks were shipped, bringing the total for the season to 25,247, compared with 73,200 last year. Although a fair demand prevailed for Canterbury potatoes a month ago, trade with northern markets has not been as high as expected.
