NASSELLA EXPENSES
Farmers Can Get Subsidy
Subsidy could now be claimed by farmers for nassella tussock control work done outside the North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Board’s area, the chairman (Mr W. C. Miller) told the monthly meeting of the Wairewa County Council yesterday. Mr Miller, chairman of the Canterbury Nassella Co-ordin-ating Committee, said that the subsidy would help farmers with "nassella problems in Heathcote and Mount Herbert Counties, and along the Waimakariri river.
Subsidies on a pound-for-pound basis could be claimed through county councils, he said. The subsidy would be paid on such things as access tracks, hand grubbing and chemical control, and tree planting. “We think a reasonable firmer should spend £2O to £3O of his own money before trying to get subsidy, but there is no hard and fast rule,” said Mr Miller.
Parcel Depots.—When the Little River railway line was closed parcels depots ceased to exist and parcels and carcases of dog meat were just dumped on the road off the bus or trucks, said Cr. K. H. Parkinson. It was decided to ask the Railway Road Services to provide depots at Kaituna, Prices Valley, Birdlings Flat and Little River. New Style.—The council agreed to try plastic instead of the usual brass tags for dog collars.
