Tabak Absent, Mann Favourite
The absence of T. J. Tabak, who will be competing in the 54mile race at Masterton, has left the Canterbury 100-kilometre cycling championship at Westport tomorrow wide open.
However, after his devastating sprint finish in the Papa-
mil club’s 50-mile championship last Saturday, R. D. Maqn must be fairly strongly favoured.
The course, from Westport to Seddonville and return, is quite flat and this should suit Mann. " His form has been fairly sluggish this season but Saturday’s finish left no doubt that he is still possibly the most consistent finisher in the province and that
he may be reaching his best form.
Last year’s winner, S. J. Stephen—if he competes, there is some uncertainty at the moment—is unlikely to get away about a mile from the finish as he did in the inaugural event but will still need watching. J. H. Cleary will be seeking his revenge after Mann rounded him with ease last Saturday, and J. S. Danielson, P. A. Skilling, R. J. Hogan and
D. Jones are bound to be in what should be a large finishing bunch. There are 33 entries, including four from the local club and seven from Greymouth.
Also on the WeA Coast, but at Greymouth, is the South Island cash 25-mile championship. Of the few entries from Canterbury, F. Hooper seems certain to take fastest time in the handicap event
