Mrs Turner Had Notable Record
(By L. Ml Canterbury women’s sport suffered a great loss with the death of Mrs Loretta Turner formerly Miss Loretta Baylis, last week. Mrs Turner represented Canterbury in women’s cricket fur many years and climaxed her career when she was selected to play for New
Zealand against the English team in the 1960-61 season. Mrs Turner was a medium pace left arm bowler and could move the ball considerably. Her batting, while not being brilliant, was at times verv useful. Mrs Turner also played representative hockey for Canterbury in the K Cup tournaiment in Whangarei in 1960, las goal-keeper.
Possibly her greatest triumph was over her disability: she was inflicted with poliomyelitis in her right arm when only three years old. However she soon overcame this physical disability with sheer determination and courage.
After a temporary retirement, Mrs Turner returned last season to help Harewood win the senior women’s hockey competition, and this season was a trialist for the two Canterbury teams to be selected for the K Cup tournament to be held in Christchurch during August. She is survived by her husband and two small sons.
