ICE MAY BE UNSUITABLE

Postponement Possible

The New Zealand longtrack ice-skating speed championships to be held at Lake Ida this week-end may have to be postponed.

A section of the ice yesterday morning showed that there was a Jin thick layer of partially-frozen ice on top of sin of solid, safe ice. “Unless the top layer freezes hard the surface will not be suitable for speed skating,” the convener of the New Zealand speed committee (Mr J. H. Havenaar) said yesterday. However, he said, the prospects for frosts were good and the sky was clear. The ice conditions have been brought about by recent snow and rain at the lake. The final decision on whether the championships will be held this week-end or not will be made this morning by Mr Havenaar after an inspection of the ice.
