Australian Basic Wage Rises
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, July 8. The Australian basic wage will rise by 2 dollars after next Monday. Workers on the lower classifications will receive “special interim relief” ranging up to 4 dollars for those on very low wages. This is the decision of the full bench of the Arbitration Commission given in Melbourne today. The decision to increase the basic wage immediately was unanimous by the three judges—Mr Justice Wright
(presiding), Mr Justice Gallagher, and Mr Justice Moore. Proportional increases will apply to adult females, juniors and apprentices under today’s basic wage decision. The commission rejected the union’s claim for restoration of automatic quarterly adjustments. The highest basic rate will be 37.25 dollars —in New South Wales.
The three judges were unanimous that the time was approaching for the introduction of a total wage system in place of the present system at a basic wage and margins.
