Governors’ ‘Cheque’
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LOS ANGELES, July 8.
The national governors’ conference approved, 49-1, a resolution supporting United States global commitments, including the military defence of South Vietnam, Associated Press reported. Governor Mark Hatfield (Oregon, Republican) cast the only vote against a resolution which Governor John Connally of Texas said supported President Johnson's policies not only in Vietnam but elsewhere in the world. “We are trying to say to Hanoi and Peking they are not going to have peace on dishonourable terms,” Connallv Hatfield told his colleagues he did not support Johnson’s conduct of the war, particularly the bombings of oil depots at Hanoi and Haiphong.
