Cancelling Stamps
Sir—More efficient use of our existing labour force is one remedy for the ill of chronic labour shortage. Our Chief Postmaster in Christchurch has stated that 150,000 pieces of mail are handled by the chief post office in Christchurch every working day. The imagination boggles at the thought of the millions and millions that must pour through all our New Zealand post offices yearly. What does the cancellation of stamps achieve? What does it cost in terms of labour and materials? Do we spend a pound to save a penny? We take these practices for granted, but many require a cold, hard appraisal to determine their real worth to the community. —Yours, etc., A. R. MACKAY. July 8, 1966.
