Freight Rates
Sir,—A pamphlet published by the New Zealand Seamen’s Union states: “New Zealand needs an overseas national line now!” Following this, doctrinaire humbug smirks lovingly on the scope and profits of existing companies. So what? Governments by taxgathering are already 50 per cent shareholders in profittaking, and not a share paid for or a fly-speck of risk taken. Not a word is mentioned that shipping , companies have paid a substantial proportion of local watersiders over £2OOO, and a majority over £l5OO. during the last financial year.—Yours, etc., A.W. July 8, 1966.
