Coral Sea Plaque

A pt'aque commemorating the Battle of the Coral Sea was presented to the English Speaking Union by Commander W. H. Withrow, base commander at Harewood of the United States Antarctic support force, acting on behalf of Vice-Admiral P. H. Ramsey, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Air), United States Navy, who was in Christchurch in May for the twentyfourth anniversary of the battle.

The president of the union (Mr J. H. Wakefield) said the plaque would be displayed in a place of honour at alt future meetings. He said that if it had not been for the Battle of the Coral Sea the Japanese would have reached New Zealand. A great deal was owed to the Americans.
