Gave Bribe To Policeman

(N.Z Pr«M Association) AUCKLAND, June 28.

An Australian who flew from Sydney to Auckland and gave an Auckland detective inspector £4OO on the condition that the officer arrange to have two other Australians released on bail on their next appearance 1 in the Magistrate’s Court appeared before Mr F. McCarthy, S.M., today.

A 40-year-old company director. Murray Stewart Riley, of Bondi, Sydney, was convicted on a charge of giving Edward Graham Perry £4OO as a bribe, to induce him to forgo his duty.

Riley admitted the charge. He was remanded until Friday for sentence. Sergeant R. S. F. Halpin said that as a result of inquiries into the activities of an Australian company operating in Australia, two persons were arrested. On June 22, he said. Perry was telephoned by accused who said he had just arrived from Sydney. A meeting was arranged and Perry was offered a 1000 dollars for the two accused, arrested on June 17 in connexion with false pretences charges, to be released on bail when they next appeared i in Court. i Mr Halpin said Riley de- ! scribed how the money would i be sent by a person in Australia. Perry then reported i the incident to his superiors, i After a second telephone I call on June 23, another

meeting was arranged and Riley gave Perty £4OO in New Zealand notes. In return, Perry was to arrange for the pair of Australians, already in custody, to be released on bail with strict reporting terms. He said Riley was then going to return to Australia to arrange to get a sum of money from a man there. When the money was raised, the strict reporting terms were to be dropped. After this interview, Riley was arrested.

Mr I. -G. Garden, principal of John McGlashan College for the last 16 years, will retire at the end of the year. Before this appointment he was on the staff of Otago Boys’ High School for about 18 years and was senior master in charge of the teaching of French from 1946.
