GUARANTEES ON GOODS

“Law Revision Overdue” (N.Z. Press Association > WELLINGTON, June 28. The Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) said in Parliament today that he believed reform of the law related to guarantees of manufactured articles was long overdue. Mr B. P. MacDonell (Opp., Dunedin Central) had asked Mr Hanan If he would ensure that where a guarantee was given with manufactured articles, those parts not covered by the guarantee were clearly set out in the guarantee form. Mr Hanan said the terms of a manufacturers* guarantee were entirely a matter for the manufacturer. No Minister had the power under law to stipulate what the guarantee should contain. The law governing the liability of manufacturers had been referred by the Law Revision Commission to the Torts and General Law Reform Committee, however. “In the course of its review of this branch of the law, the committee will doubtless consider the question whether manufacturers’ guarantees should be subject to legal regulation. “My opinion is that reform of this aspect of the law is long overdue.”
