‘NO GAIN’ FOR CHINA’S FOES
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) HONG KONG, June 28. The Chinese Foreign Minister, Mr Chen Yi, declared yesterday that China’s enemies would gain nothing from the purge now sweeping the country.
The chief victim of the purge—or “proletarian cultural revolution,” as Peking calls it —has been Peng Chen. He was Mayor of China's capital city and senior member of the Politburo, whose downfall, together with other senior officials, is viewed as the outcome of one of the most extensive political upheavals in China since the Communists came to power.
Chen Yi stated: “Seeing that we are carrying on a cultural revolution in a big way, a handful of Imperialists and their followers think that something must have gone wrong with our country and our State power, and that it seems they will have something to gain therefrom. If they do attempt to gain, these lords are more stupid than Pigs.” Writers’ Meeting He said the fact that the Chinese Communist Party dared to “mobilise the masses to carry on a cultural revolution in a big way” proved that China was powerful, that its State power was consolidated, and that its people were united. Chen Yi was opening a today “Afro-Asian writers' emergency meeting” on Vietnam, attended by some 141 writers. The meeting is serving as a forum for attacks on the Soviet Union and the United States.
