Communists In New Zealand
Sir, —In his recent speech to the R.S.A. the Minister of Defence, Mr Eyre, has followed the current National Party line of implying that anyone opposing the use of New Zealand military forces in Vietnam is a Communist. This unwarranted implication, little better than crude McCarthyism, is strongly resented by those of us—and we are legion—who fought to defend the cause of freedom and democracy in the last world war and who are still completely loyal to Queen and country. The writer has the honour to still wear uniform in the service of New Zealand, but nevertheless is convinced of the stupidity of giving military support to the corrupt regime of Marshal Ky of South Vietnam. Our Labour Party policy on Vietnam, I feel, is the correct one under the circumstances of this unnecessary and “unwinable” war. Does this make me a Communist?—Yours, etc., GUNNAR. June 16, 1966. [The Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) says that it is not his practice to reply to such correspondents.]
