Shrinking Violents
Sir,—May I congratulate the Ashburton Hunt Club on their choice of a flower? To choose a violent as their emblem shows originality and verve. After all, hunting is not for sissies and a few violents strewn in the hunt!
club’s path must add considerably to the excitement of the chase and the pleasure of the onlookers. Perhaps the spray of violents caused rather more commotion than admiration in the ballroom, but I must say I rather hanker to have seen such a sight. I hope the recipients were grateful. In these conservative days it is a pleasure to see an old-established organisation leading the way. Perhaps next year they will present not merely spays but carnages of violents. —Yours, etc. FASCINATED. June 27, 1966. [Much as we regret misprints, we feel that this one has its compensations in provoking the above letter. — Ed., “The Press.”]
