The Budget
Sir, —“Disillusioned Nationalist” would like people to forget the savage taxes imposed by his Labour Government in 1958 to pay specifically for their reckless promise to give a tax refund of £lOO to the Wealthy. It was a cruel blow to the working man, and the aged and the sick, particularly when Labour gave a solemn promise not to increase the rates of taxation. For the benefit of your correspondent, social security benefits were introduced into New Zealand as follows: Age, 1896; widow, 1911; war and miners, 1915; school dental service, 1921; blind, 1924; family, 1925. Hospital benefits were introduced in Auckland in 1841. These benefits and many others were firmly established before the first Labour Government was heard of. The comments of your correspondent are as good as his Labour Party promises: just empty.—Yours, etc., DISILLUSIONED LABOURITE. June 27, 1966.
