RELIGIOUS SURVEY

8000 Riccarton Homes

Eight thousand Riccarton homes will be visited by a team of 300 men during a religious survey on the morning of Saturday, July 9. Aimed at discovering the religious affiliation of those in the area, the survey was being organised under the auspices of the Riccarton Ministers’ Fraternal, said the Rev. R. J. Griffith, minister of St. Ninian’s Presbyterian Church. The visiting team will be drawn from 13 Anglican, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian and Methodist congregations in the area. Each visitor would carry leaflets giving the names of ministers and the addresses of churches in the area. The visitors would also distribute leaflets describing the work of the Good Samaritan Society A preliminary meeting of visitors would be held on July 3 at St. Teresa’s Church Hall. It would be addressed by Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., on “what the community needs from the church.”

Although several similar surveys had been made in Riccarton by individual denominations, the survey next month would be the first united effort, Mr Griffith said. As a result denominations would be able to bring their rolls up to date, and greetings of the churches would be carried to the people of the area.
