AIR FILTER TEST
Exchange At Rotorua "The Pre»«" Special Service AUCKLAND, June 27. An experiment to see how effectively hydrogen sulphide can be filtered out of the Rotorua air through activated charcoal will start soon in the manual telephone exchange.
A large air-conditioning plant Is being installed in the exchange for the experiment. The district engineer for the Post Office (Mr W. H. Hickson) said the tests were necessary to see if the filter would prevent corrosion of exchange equipment. Its effectiveness had to be studied before the completion of the new automatic telephone exchange in 1968. Rotorua has the largest manual telephone exchange in New Zealand because the corrosive effect of the air for many years prevented a decision being made to build an automatic one.
