HURRICANE’S EFFECTS
Cash Short In W. Samoa (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) APLA (Western Samoa), June 26. The shortage of cash after the destruction from the hurricane last January has caused Apia merchants to reckon on a fall in retail sales of more than £600,000. A survey of 16 firms by the Economic Development Department shows such a fall would represent a 15 per cent fall on last year’s retail turnover of £4 million.
In addition 10 per cent of retail staff are expected to be eliminated by the end of the year.
The real effect of the hurricane will be felt over the next few months when returns from copra fall and there will be no other income in sight until banana shipments resume in September and cocoa shipments later in the year.
