ELECTION IN PAPARUA
Four Council Nominees
An election will be held on July 16 to fill the Hornby riding vacancy on the Paparua County Council caused by the death of Mr R. J. Roberts. Four nominations had been received by the returning officer (Mr A. Kelly) when they closed at noon yesterday. They were those of Mrs J. E. Woodham and Messrs D. S. Goulding, M. McConnell and T. B. Whelan.
Mrs Woodham, a member of the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board, was the leading unsuccessful candidate in the council elections last October.
Only one nomination, that of Mr D. S. Goulding, was received for the Hornby county town and Hornby riding seat held by Mr Roberts on the Hornby Licensing Trust, and an election will not be needed. The Paparua County-Riccar-ton Borough seat on the North Canterbury Hospital Board held by Mr Roberts will be filled by appointment. Sub-committees of both councils will make a recommendation to their councils at their meetings on July 11. One nomination, that of Mr A. W. Johns, has been received by the Waimairi County Council’s returning officer (Mr K. Maclachlan) for the Belfast riding vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr W. E. Cassidy. Nominations will close at noon on July 8, and, if necessary, an election will be held on July 27.
