Leading Teams Untroubled In Women’s Basketball
Results in the ninth round of the Canterbury senior women’s basketball competition on • Saturday were easily predictable, and as a result there were very few surprises in any of the games.
As expected, Technical beat West B with no trouble at all. In a televised match, West A defeated Sacred Heart, and St. Nicholas had its third win of the season. New Brighton had the bye. Results:— Technical 36, West B 15. West A 30, Sacred Heart 24. St. Nicholas 33, Teachers’ College 17. Points.—Technical 16, West A 12, New Brighton 11, Sacred Heart 7, St. Nicholas 6, Teachers’ College 2, West B 0. Technical v. West B From the beginning Technical was strongly in command, exploiting its highly effective combination and excellent goal shooting. West played what was perhaps one of its best games this year, but this was not sufficient to keep Technical in check.
After half-time, when Technical led, 20-9, West tried to extend itself fully, and there was some good play in the centre. However, the goal shoots could not take advantage of this and this often lost points through Inaccuracy. As the game progressed, Technical, perhaps a little overconfident, played less efficiently, especially in the goal third. West A v. Sacred Heart The game began well with a clean goal to West, and this was followed by some rather fumbling play at the West goal after the next throw-off. The ball then travelled to the Sacred Heart end, where it was intercepted by West’s L. Dawson, who played an extremely useful game throughout the match.
West held the lead well from the beginning. Its restrained economy of movement was used to great effect and helped it maintain a consistent standard throughout the game. Sacred Heart, on the other hand, was playing a very fast game, perhaps a little faster than its capabilities warranted, This speed was occasionally successful, but at other times lost the team a number of balls. After half-time, West seemed determined to keep its lead.
passing on the part of both teams was a little wild. Sacred Heart was able to score goal for goal for a while, but it had lost too much ground for this to be effective. The score went from 27-16 to 28-18 to 29-19. This show of energy on the part of Sacred Heart came too late, and West A was not unduly extended to win. St. Nicholas v. Teachers' College Neither Teachers’ College nor St. Nicholas is doing particularly well in the competition, but Saturday’s game was interesting If only because the teams were reasonably well matched. Teachers’ College lost a lot of ground by faulty passing, which was particularly poor in the goal circle, and D. McGregor was a little off form In the opening stages of the match. However, she regained her form as the game progressed, and shot' some good goals. St. Nicholas was shooting well when the ball got safely to the goal, but the ball was often lost at the goal circle. St. Nicholas led, 14-12, at half-time.
After half-time St. Nicholas exerted itself more strongly, while Teachers’ College seemed to lose heart as its passing deteriorated rather badly.
