SURPRISE WIN TO OLD BOYS
High School Old Boys produced one of its most impressive performances this season to beat the highly favoured Y.M.C.A. side, 35-34, in the twelfth round of the inter-club A grade men’s basketball competition on Saturday. It was without doubt the biggest upset of the season, because only a week earlier Old Boys had gone down in an uninspiring display against
the University B team. Probably the most popular Old Boys player immediately after the game would have been the guard, K. Milligan. He scored the goal which put the two teams level at 34-all and right on time was given two free throws when fouled by an opposing player. The clock had signalled the end of the game before he took his shots and so th? outcome depended entirely on his shooting ability and match temperament. His first shot sail straight through the basket. The second missed but he had won the game for Old Boys. In the other games Bumham comfortably beat Rex, 39-29, and University B overwhelmed Y-Boys, 51-17. Points are: University A 18, Y.M.C.A. 17, High School Old Boys 14, University B 11, Burnham 10, Rex 2, Y-Boys O. EVEN STRUGGLE OLD BOYS 35: A. Hounsell 13, K. Milligan 10, S. Hunt 6, M. Gleason 2, G. Orchard 2, P. Bell 2. Y.M.C.A. 34: R. Entwistle 10, P. Ross 10, D. Rattray 6, M. Clements 4, C. Walton 4. It was a long time since two teams had been io evenly
matched as Old Boys and Y.M.C.A. were on Saturday. The scores were level 15 times. At half-time the score was 12-all, and at full-time 34-all. Only a free shot by Milligan taken after full-time gave the winning points to Old Boys. Old Boys, probably the youngest senior team, gave a convincing display against their more experienced opponents. Their shooting was not always accurate, especially under pres- ■ sure. But their defence and rebounding were excellent. > Gleason was often in too much • of a hurry to get his shots away. . Hounsell, Milligan and Hunt carried the score along well, I and Hunt at times showed con-
siderable ability under the basket. Y.M.C.A. was well below form. Entwistle Injured Ms ankle in the early stages and this was a contributing factor. Rattray missed some simple shots and Walton Was too casual in his approach. Ross was perhaps the only Y.M.C.A. player to strike good form. WIN TO BURNHAM BURNHAM A 39: P. Dvson 12, G. Ward 9. G. Costello 8, D. Watson 6, B. Rose 4. REX 29: P. Ward 12. P. Fox 7, P. Foster 4, N. Saunders 4, D. Verey 2. Although Bex narrowed the margin slightly In the closing stages, there was never any doubt as to the eventual outcome after the first half. With Dyson, Ward and Costello all in good form, Burnham was well in command for most of the second spell. Burnham led, 20-l«, at halftime. The veteran, Fox was in good form for Rex. Ward, another older player, was also in good form. UNFIT PLATERS UNIVERSITY B 51: D. de Lisle 16, W. Centre 13, P. Sharp 13 B. Strong 4, W. Smith 4, T. Just 1. Y-BOYS 17: K. Ewings 6. B. Kelly 6, P. Dash 3, R. Dew 2. Weak passing which steadily deteriorated made the plight of Y-Boys considerably worse than it need have been. It was obvious that one or two players in the side were not fit and their defence was extremely weak.
University B controlled its game well, although it was not until the latter part of the first spell that it began to dominate the match. De Lisle, Centre and Sharp all had good games. University B led, 21-8, at half-time. LOWER GRADES Other results:— Senior Reserve.—Section I (Tuesday): Christ’s College 39, Teachers" College 22; Orients A 29, H. 5.0.8. B 23; 1.8.
