SYDNEY. The New Zealander, Lucifina (Hlllum —Compass Rose) landed a bet of 14,000 dollars to 4000 when she won the Two-year-old Handicap, for fillies, at Rosehill on Saturday. She started a 3 to 1 favourite. Lucifina beat Mary Poppins by a length and a half, with the outsider. Yataghan, three lengths and a half away third. Lucifina gave her jockey. S. Spinks, 37} wins. He needs only three more to break the record of the former apprentice jockey, H. Cope. G. Moore caught his rival jockeys napping with a last-to-flrst dash on Trevors to win the W. J. McKeM Cup (l}m). Trevors beat Man About Town by three-quarters of a length with Synfyl a head away third. The New Zealander, Prince Murat, was fourth. The field ran at a funeral pace until past the six furlongs, where Trevors was second to last. Suddenly Moore brough a roar from the crowd as he dashed Trevors, with his big weight of 9-4, around the field to take a dear lead.
Moore's tactics caught the other riders off guard and in spite of their advantage In
weight they failed to go after him. Trevors led Into the straight from Man About Town, and, hard ridden in the last furlong, won convincingly. It was Moore’s first win after a sequence of 15 losing rides. Trevors' tame of 2mdn 43 2-ssec, was 14 l-ssec slower than the course record.
Garcon (sired in New Zealand but born in Australia) won the Two-year-old Handicap (seven furlongs). Moore could have ridden the Smith-trained Garcon, but preferred the mount on Flowing Over. Garcon raced right away In the straight to score by three lengths from Lecture On. Brida Chief was a long neck away third and Flowing Over finished fourth, five lengths and a quarter from the winner. Garcon, a brown gelding by> Rawalpindi N (imp.) from Festive Aar, was rejected by discriminating yearling sales buyers. His owner, Mr D. Chrystal, jun., bought Festive Air in foal to Rawalpindi in New Zealand, and Garcon was born in Australia. Mr Chrystal sent Garcon to the Melbourne Yearling Sales 'but could not get a bid for him.
