HUGHES HAS FOUR WINS

“The Press” Speciol Service HASTINGS. The northern horseman F. Hughes won four races from five mounts at the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s winter meeting at Hastings on Saturday. It was the tenth time he has achieved the feat.

One of Hughes’s rides was a lucky mount on Sir Juvante, which was to have been ridden by J. T. Anderson. When Anderson broke his odilarbone in a track mishap on Thursday, Sir Juvante’s owner, Mr G. K. Wattie, of Hastings, engaged Hughes.

Sir Juvante responded to a vigorous ride from Hughes to beat Dunraven by a neck in the Mahora Handicap and complete a £ll6 13s 6d T.A.B. double with the Winter Handicap winner, Whakamoa. Hughes won the First Opapa Trial Plate on Papagayo and the Second Qpapa Trial on Skylit. Kaikohe completed a

great day for him by winning the Rotopai Hack Handicap. Although he had offers of good rides for the second day, Hughes will remain in Auckland next Saturday for the Avondale meeting.

Koral’s failure to finish eloser than third in the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase was one of the major disappointments of the day. He has had five-starts on his current northern campaign and has yet to win. On Saturday he was left In front when Facade terminated a brUHant exhibition of jumping in front by crashing at the half-mile. Approaching the last fence Koral appeared to have an unbeatable two or three lengths lead on Count Lin. But on the flat he was quickly passed by Count Lin and then by Brevity. Count Lin jumped well and won solidly, although by only three-quarters of a length. H's owner-trainer, T. Knowles, said afterwards the horse would be retired.

Eiffel Tower won the Whakatu Hurdles, but mixed Ms jumping and unless Ms technique improves it will be a long time before he ta a good hurdler. Fine, eold weather, and • firm track, mado conditions ideal. There wat a good attendance.
