Christchurch Has Good Victory

CHRISTCHURCH 25: W. Birtwistle, R. Morris and R. Barber (2) tries; G. Waterreus two conversions and two field goals; B. Watt a field goal. MERIVALE-PAPANUI 3: L. McCaughan a field goal. The championship co-leader soundly beat Merivale-Papanui by 25 points to 3. Christchurch always held the upper hand. Only some poor handling and passing by the Christchurch backs stopped the score from reaching gigantic proportions. | Merivale-Papanui tried hard throughout, but its forwards could not match the drive and

skill of the Christchurch pack. For Merivale, G. Clements was often prominent in the loose and D. Pirie and J. Ullrich toiled hard in the tight. Its backs tackled determinedly but lacked penetration. R. Barber, from North Otago, playing his second game for Christchurch, was in good form. D. Quested gave him excellent support. J. Baird was often prominent with strong, bullocking runs. K. King gave a good display. His long, accurate passes gave B. Watt plenty of room to move. Watt played soundly and D. Arnold was in his usual unpretictable form. Referee: Mr A. Powell.
