Abandoned Cars

A Railway Road Services bus which was stranded near the Sign of the Kiwi because of icy roads on Friday night was able to continue to Christchurch on Saturday afternoon after grit had been spread on the road. Four passengers, who had travelled from Governor’s Bay, had to walk the three miles to Christchurch and many motorists were forced to abandon their cars after inches of snow and hail in the area made the roads impassable. It was Saturday afternoon before most of the vehicles could be moved. One of four cars which had been abandoned near the Sign of the Kiwi rather than risk the dangerous, icy descent down the other side, had been tied to a post by the driver to get an anchor.
