PANDORA BANK
New Survey Planned "The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, June 26. A new survey of the Pandora bank, scene of the wreck of the collier Kaitawa, may be undertaken by the Royal New Zealand Navy hydrographic branch in the summer. The last reliable survey of the bank and the surrounding area was carried out more than 100 years ago by the Royal Navy survey ship, Pandora, after which the bank is named.
No decision had yet been made on survey programmes for the coming season and no approach had been made by the Marine Department for a special survey of the area of the Kaitawa disaster, the Navy hydrographer, Commander W. J. L. Smith, said in Wellington. But the New Zealand hydrographic committee, which included representatives of the Marine Department, the Lands and Survey Department, the shipping lines and the Navy, would meet next month to discuss and recommend priorities.
